Lichen Sclerosus

Is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. The disease primarily occurs in the genital area. Read more about Lichen Sclerosus below.

Lichen Sclerosus (LS) is a skin condition, particularly affecting the labia, around the vagina, and sometimes around the anus. The skin becomes white and thin. Small tears can develop, causing the main symptoms of itching and pain.

Lichen sclerosus primarily affects women. It usually begins between the ages of 45 and 60. Sometimes the disease also occurs in adult men and occasionally in children (more often in girls than in boys). When a girl or boy has Lichen Sclerosus, it is called pediatric LS.

The disease occurs on the:

  • Inner labia
  • Outer labia
  • Clitoris
  • Vaginal entrance (introitus)
  • Anus (perianal)
  • Trunk (upper part and around the navel)
  • Scalp, palms, and soles (this is rare)
  • On the penis in men

There may be visible changes in the skin, such as:

  • Lightening or whitening of the skin
  • Thinning of the skin
  • Small tears
  • Small bruises or blood spots
  • Scarring: the skin shrinks and the vaginal entrance becomes tighter

LS usually looks similar on the left and right sides, creating a ‘figure-8’ pattern on the skin. This is visible around the vaginal and anal openings.

Deumavan protective ointment is recommended for Lichen Sclerosus and is extremely suitable for use as a base ointment, at those times when you are not using corticosteroids. You can use the ointment as often as you wish. Deumavan protective ointment prevents irritation and damage to the (very) sensitive skin. The ointment contains high-quality paraffins that cover the skin with an effective protective layer. Deumavan was specially developed for this.
